Frequently Asked Questions

Please contact me at  sarah@purelyelectrolysis.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Electrolysis is not the same as laser hair removal.  With laser treatment, a laser beam is passed over the surface of the skin and is absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the hairs, causing a reduction in growth.  Due to the dependency on the presence of melanin, it is most effective on darker hairs and does not fully destroy the hair at its source.  Electrolysis targets the blood supply to each hair individually and its effectiveness is not dependent on the colour of the hair or the tone of the skin.  It is the only permanent method of hair removal.

Electrolysis is more comfortable now than ever before.  The sensation can be different for different people and can depend on the area being treated.  Commonly there is a very short sensation of heat as the current is applied to the hair root. During the initial consultation I can treat a couple of hairs to let you experience the sensation before progressing to a treatment.  I offer different appointment durations to ensure your comfort at all times.

This will depend on your specific requirements and we can discuss this in more detail at your initial consultation.

Most areas of the face or body can be treated.  Electrolysis works by treating individual hairs one at a time, so is particularly effective for smaller surface areas such as  the face, underarms, fingers, toes and chest.  We can discuss your individual requirements during the initial consultation.

Anyone over 16 can have electrolysis regardless of gender.  There are certain medical conditions that may require specific tailoring of the treatment or other conditions that may prevent electrolysis being safely administered.  This will be discussed during the initial consultation before starting treatment.

Following treatment, the most important thing is to try to keep the treated area as clean and protected as possible for the first 24 hours.  I will provide an aftercare leaflet explaining everything you can expect following treatment and the best way to ensure treatments are most comfortable and effective.
